Elif Shafak as always shows a rather nuanced perspective and avoids stereotyping. We also see what the years of torture, imprisonment and humiliation can do to the individual life.Īll this is intertwined with t he reflections on religious beliefs in the Muslim society. There are descriptions of house search, torture, imprisonment of the individuals for holding different opinions to the ones accepted by the government and society. The story does provide an insight into Turkey’s turbulent past such as military coup in the 1980s and how life looked like during the rule of the military. Three Daughters of Eve by Elif Shafak tackles many different topics including religion, or rather t he meaning of God in one’s life, how cultural and political circumstances shape lives of the individuals and the position of women in Eastern and Western societies. ![]()

The idea of the seelie court vs. The romance is equally compelling, with the love interest’s backstory standing out is absolutely incredible. The characters are not exactly likable but remain compelling no one feels good and no one feels bad. The plot is twisty and creepy you can almost feel the book getting darker by the moment, as Val falls increasingly into drug addiction and into the faerie world. ![]() Holly Black’s writing is so, so engrossing – she is just absolutely magical. So this book was just an absolutely wild ride. Everyone is completely awful, everyone makes really big mistakes, and you cannot look away. Upon running into a troll named Ravus, she finds herself falling deeper and deeper into the faerie world – and maybe in love. Valiant is a Beauty and the Beast retelling following Val, who, upon running away from home, falls in with some pals on the subway. I adored this story even more than her earlier Tithe.
